Introducing the Service-Learning Internship!

The MSSU Service-Learning Program has developed an internship to meet the needs of both students and community organizations while optimizing on the experience for the university and community as a whole.

Through the Service-Learning Internship, a professional in the community mentors a student as that student serves a community organization in a pre-professional position. Students receive the guidance and professional development opportunities of a traditional internship while community organizations are less burdened in supervisory roles.

If you are interested in having a Service-Learning Intern at your organization, please complete our Service-Learning Internship Description Form.

Remember to keep the student's professional expectations in mind as well as your organization's needs. The internship should:

  • extend beyond basic service
  • incorporate the student's current knowledge
  • challenge the student to learn more about their field of study as they serve

The Selection Process

  1. Read about making the best internship for your organization and our students.
  2. Complete the Service-Learning Internship Description Form.
  3. We review and approve your description.
  4. We promote the internship to MSSU faculty and students in preparation of registration for Spring classes.
  5. Students contact you with their résumé to schedule an interview.
  6. Contact us once an intern is selected.
  7. If possible, please provide contact information for a professional you know who may be interested in mentoring your intern. (If you need help selecting a mentor, we will be happy to oblige. We suggest the potential mentor submit a résumé for the Service-Learning Program's records and to provide to the intern. The mentor must interview with us as well as with the intern.)
  8. We hold an orientation session for the students, community organization representatives, mentors and advising faculty.
